Whitetail Deer FactsWhitetail Deer live off of twigs, leaves, grasses, forbs (weedy plants), fruits and nuts. The “rut” or breeding season is November to December.
Fawns are born as early as April in South Texas, and May and June in the rest of Texas. Bucks shed antlers between December and March. Starting in May of the following year, bucks grow a new set of antlers, and stay “in velvet” until September. Deer are aged by the teeth, not the horns.
